Alternative Mulches for Sustainable Greenhouse Tomato Production

نویسندگان

چکیده

Soil mulching has advantages for horticultural crops, from both agronomic and phytosanitary points of view. The most common material used is polyethylene (PE); however, promising alternatives the circular economy exist, such as straw (ST) biodegradable biopolymers (BBs). effect three aforementioned mulches was evaluated compared to non-mulched soil in a Mediterranean greenhouse two years an organic tomato crop. Physical (moisture temperature) physicochemical properties soil, addition crop yield on weed control, were assessed. Additionally, deterioration plastic temperature higher mulched soils, but few differences found between BB at end second cycle. Evaporation lower general, without big among types mulch. Crop did not show differences. At trials, 16 variables evaluated, only slight increase pH detected ST-mulched plots. film degradation reached 5.6% 6.7% total surface first cycles, respectively. Weeds equally limited PE, BB, ST mulches, cereal seeds contained within germinated randomly all over In summary, offered same benefits conventional PE Therefore, they can be considered feasible more sustainable option, being consistent with principles bioeconomy.

Challenges and Opportunities in Tomato Production Chain and Sustainable Standards

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is an important member of the Solanaceae family. It is mainly used as food and cash crop globally. Tomato also serves as an ornamental plant in some parts of the world. In urban areas, this crop is included in the foodscaping systems where it is grown in hanging baskets, growing pots and aquaponics for aesthetic and food purposes. Tomato production is m...

Sustainable Production Practices Adopted by Greenhouse and Nursery Plant Growers

Given recent consumer and market interest in more sustainable products and business practices, researchers conducted a nationwide survey of greenhouse and nursery crop growers to determine the current state of the industry in terms of sustainability. Growers were asked about the importance of sustainability, their views of state environmental regulations, sustainable practices in place and ones...

An Agent-Based Extensible Climate Control System for Sustainable Greenhouse Production

The slow adoption pace of new control strategies for sustainable greenhouse climate control by industrial growers, is mainly due to the complexity of identifying and resolving potentially conflicting climate control requirements. In this paper, we present a multi-agent-based climate control system that allows new control strategies to be adopted without any need to identify or resolve conflicts...

Engineering of tomato for the sustainable production of ketocarotenoids and its evaluation in aquaculture feed.

Ketocarotenoids are high-value pigments used commercially across multiple industrial sectors as colorants and supplements. Chemical synthesis using petrochemical-derived precursors remains the production method of choice. Aquaculture is an example where ketocarotenoid supplementation of feed is necessary to achieve product viability. The biosynthesis of ketocarotenoids, such as canthaxanthin, p...

Greenhouse tomato limited cluster production systems: crop management practices affect yield.

Limited-cluster production systems may be a useful strategy to increase crop production and profitability for the greenhouse tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill). In this study, using an ebb-and-flood hydroponics system, we modified plant architecture and spacing and determined the effects on fruit yield and harvest index at two light levels. Single-cluster plants pruned to allow two leaves ab...
